Fellow of the University of Wales at Queen's College, Oxford where he worked on the Quarrel between Horus and Seth. He won a D.Phil for work on this subject in 1949.

Went to Liverpool University, where he won an M.A. degree on Ancient Egypt's influence on Greek religious cults in the Mycenean period.
